Hello all,
Not long ago Tex and I started discussing the idea of having an annual pipers gathering here in the states. So far it looks like it will take place at Tex's house in Syracuse NY. At this point, it looks like it will be happening sometime after February and we could potentially have a "special guest" attend as well, though no promises on that as of yet.
If you're interested in joining us, post a reply to this thread and get in contact with either Tex or me. _________________ Aaron |

Hey Aaron,
I could potentially attend this depending on the date, etc. I think that so many of us play this instrument in isolation from others that a get together would be really helpful. Also, the annual "Pipers Gathering" held in August in Kilington, VT may be a good venue to meet. With a bit of pressure on the organizers to show that there are quite a few of us out there, perhaps prominent instructors/players could be booked for instruction and/or performance. _________________ John Nelson

All Right!
Thanks for expressing your interest in coming! We haven't decided on a date yet, but I think that the details will be worked out early in the new year. I'll post more info as soon as we have it.
I agree, because so many of us have learned to play in almost complete isolation, I really think meeting other pipers would be a great opportunity. Since I started playing, I've only met two other pipers, and only played with one of those, neither played the Swedish pipes though - Both played historical pipes of various sorts. I would certainly enjoy playing with other pipers as well as maybe discussing different approaches to tuning and maintenance, etc.
I'll be sure to add any new info to this thread as soon as I have it.
Thanks again. _________________ Aaron |

Hello everyone,
I just learned about this forum from John Nelson (bagpiperjohn). My name is Mark Stayton, and I'm one of the organizers of The Pipers' Gathering, an "alternative" bagpipes event held each August in Killington, Vermont USA. You can read more about the Gathering on our website at www.pipersgathering.org.
We're always looking to expand our offerings, and would be willing to consider adding a sackpipa instructor if there is sufficient interest. This would be something we'd do in 2010, as our instructor lineup for 2009 is already complete.
If you would be interested in attending a weekend of sackpipa instruction at our event in Killington, VT in August of 2010, please let me know. You can reply here, or via PM, or email me at mark (dot) stayton (at) pipersgathering (dot) org _________________ Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks a million for the response. I'm always looking to meet other pipers. 2010 is still a little way off and VT is a little far for me, otherwise I'd jump on the opportunity, but I'd certainly be interested in attending the pipers gathering sometime in the future.
Tex and I have some plans worked out for a gathering specifically for Swedish pipers which we hope to host this winter in Syracuse NY, if you know anyone interested in joining us, please pass the word along. If everything works out as we plan, this could be a really memorable event for any Swedish pipers here in North America. _________________ Aaron |

It looks like Aaron and I will be at this festival at the same time http://www.scandinavianjamestown.org/3scand.htm so, should we call this the first meeting??
If any other pipers happen to be in the area PLEASE stop by, this will be a very informal event. _________________ Luck follows the generous. |

I'll second that.
If anyone wants to come, it's a great time.
I've attended every year but one since 2005. The viking reenactment group I belong to is one of the staple features at the event. There are a lot of very talented musicians who know a lot about traditional Scandinavian music in attendance every year.
Plus there is very good food. _________________ Aaron |

I would have went but I'm in a very fast paced Summer II semester in college. Also, New York is quite far from me. I may try and get to one of te Pipers Gathering events one day as a vendor/instrument maker.

We can talk about doing the Pipers Gathering for next year if that would work best for everyone. That event has no Swedish pipes and it could be pretty pricey once you work the cost of a lodging, food, travel and the cost of the ticket. It seems like an event with Nordic fiddle players would be more beneficial to our playing and learning than going to an event that features bagpipes but, hey thats my opinion. What do others think? _________________ Luck follows the generous. |
