why i came here: i love the swedish traditional music. I've just discovered Olle Gällmo's website and this is a revelation ! Could we have such an ancyclopedy for the boha ! It is so generous to give for free your knowledge. i knew that säckpipas are similar to our boha by the way reeds are made. The way you play graces notes, and halfclosed fingering and a tricks i can't explain. Their history are similar too : the last ancestral boha-player died and the instrument nearly disappeared. Some musicien during the 70's to make knew one and today, we are more than 200 boha's player in France. (We had the chance to find a recording of this musicien in 1994.)
i think we have a lot to share.

My main instrument: Old fashioned Highland pipes (old-pitch heirloom made around 1870, whale's tooth and brass mounts), kaba gaida
Other instruments I play: djura gaida, Macedonian, Slovak, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, French and Italian pipes. I learned these from old-timers within their communities during the 1960s. I later studied Ethnomusicology, specialising on the use of bagpipes in European folkdance, at Harvard University, 1980 - 85.
Other interests: Folklore and folkculture. I inherited a wealth of Gaelic lore and customs from my family and teachers. Back in the '60s I set out to learn about other European folklore and culture, especially in the Balkans and Slovakia. I got my Swedish sackpipa about 30 years ago from the late Bob Thomas, who I first met in 1966 and who used to visit me to share our interests. We travelled together in Italy in 1975.
Although I don't have a website, I have a page on Facebook under my full name which has albums with pictures of many of my bagpipes and others.

I got a set of Leif Eriksson bagpipes a few years back but I've been playing very seldom, mainly due to ongoing house renovation projects over the years...

My Name: Heath Morton

Musical instruments I play: None! About twenty years ago I played bass guitar in high school for about six months as it was mandatory to play something. The sackpipa, when I make one, will effectively be my first as I have forgotten everything about music.
Other interests: Widely varied. My interest in the early middle ages (the dark ages were not that dark) and reconstructing things, preferably from archaeological evidence where possible, brought me to bagpipes in general and the sackpipa in particular.
I make the odd woodworking and blacksmithing tools for instance. Did a plough earlier this year and ploughed a field behind some oxen. It worked! Even in my untrained hands.
So I intend to make the earliest, most low technology sackpipa I can, with as few extensions as I can get away with. I perceive a true 'folk' item, such as I can deduce is likely to have been made a long time ago in a villagers spare time, when not mostly occupied scratching a subsistence from the land. Therefore, I plan to use exclusively the tools I have made, and any others I will have to make.
