special events such as the Ball.  There is a page with dance events
including the regular Sunday dance schedule.

On the music page, notice the addition of a jam twice a month at Betsy's
Back Porch on 54th and Nicollet. There will be a free lesson before the jam.
Just show up and get tips and tunes from the best Scandinavian musicians in
town. To find out who will be teaching, look on the music page.

We hope this new web presence will help members of the community and will
bring in new ones.

To:  Swedish Organizations

To celebrate the centennial year (Aug. 2008-Aug. 2009) of the birth of the
great Swedish American naturalist, Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996), the
Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, located in Peterson's
hometown of Jamestown, New York, has prepared a 20 minute DVD about Peterson's
life and work, which is being made available to all Swedish groups that
would like to present a program about Peterson to their membership.

Peterson is widely acknowledged to have inspired the 20th century
environmental movement.  His passion for the natural world led him to author
and illustrate A Field Guide to the Birds, a book that made birds, and
eventually other subjects, easily recognizable, thus opening up the world of
nature study to all people.  A Field Guide to the Birds was selected by the
New York Public Library as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th
century.  As a writer, painter, photographer and lecturer, his contributions
were enormous.  During his lifetime he was the recipient of every major
award for ornithology, natural science and conservation, including the
Presidential Medal of Freedom.

If your organization would like a copy of this DVD, please send your check
for $10.00 to cover postage and handling to the Roger Tory Peterson
Institute, 311 Curtis Street, Jamestown, NY 14701, Attn. Jan Johnson.  If
you have any questions, please call 716-665-2473, x231.

This project was made possible, in part, through a grant from the Swedish
Council of America.

ASF's reciprocal exchange program: US to Sweden

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) helps Swedish university students
and young professionals to undertake training positions and internships with
firms in the U.S. by providing visa sponsorship through its U.S. Government
designated Exchange Visitor (J visa) Program.

In a reciprocal venture, ASF and its cooperating office in Sweden: AF/Borås,
are able to help Americans who have arranged positions in Sweden to obtain
the requisite work permits as participants in our reciprocal program.

If you know of any students who are able to develop their own jobs in Sweden
and need help getting the work permit, by all means have them get in touch
with us at ASF at the email address: trainscan@amscan.org

Program requirements are:

a.. The applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 20 years of age
b.. The Swedish job offer must be related to his/her studies and must
offer income of at least SEK 13500 per month
c.. Housing must be arranged and confirmed
d.. The Swedish immigration authorities charge a fee of SEK 1000
e.. At the time of application ASF charges an application fee of US $50
which includes a twelve-month ASF student membership.  ASF also requires
that the applicant enroll in the health and accident insurance program of
the International Medical Group at a cost of $2.20 per day.
 f..
The work permit application process takes at least two to three months from
the time the student contacts ASF to apply.    Application is accepted
throughout the year. FMI Jean Prahl Jean@amscan.org

ICELAND

Fund raising for Icelandic youngsters

When the financial crisis struck Iceland in autumn 2008, people all over the
Nordic Region felt a strong need to express solidarity with their Icelandic
friends and neighbours. For example, the Nordic Association in Norway has
produced stickers featuring the slogan "Nordic Friends of Iceland" which we
are now on sale. All the money raised will go towards helping Icelandic
children and young people take part in Nordic activities in 2009.

Attending Nordic gatherings, or taking part in youth exchange programmes,
school exchange programmes, school camps and job exchange programmes has
become far more expensive for Icelanders since the collapse of their
currency. The Association wants to make sure that Icelandic youngsters are
not excluded from the the Nordic community. In a world of major and often
unforeseen changes it is important that Nordic co-operation continues to run
smoothly and provides a solid platform for identifying joint solutions.

The Nordic Association has been forging friendships and links between people
in the Region since 1919 by means of local authority twin town programmes,
school exchange programmes, Nordjobb, scholarship schemes, etc. Each year,
the Association provides scholarships to help Icelanders attend 'folk high
schools' and to take specialised vocational training in Norway.
Icelanders who opt to live in Norway are able to receive information about
the practicalities of the move from either the Association or from Hello
Norden. This autumn, Hello Norden Iceland has been holding courses for over
300 people who wish to move to another Nordic country, the majority to
Norway. The Nordic Association in Norway has also made contingency plans for
courses about the practicalities of living and working in Norway as well as
Norwegian-language courses for Icelanders.

The "Nordic friends of Iceland" stickers are 32 mm in diameter, cost NKR
30.00 incl. shipping and can be ordered on www.norden.no,
foreningen@norden.no or +47 22 51 67 60. All the money raised will go
towards helping Icelandic children and young people take part in Nordic
activities in 2009.
