July  Tu - Su-NORWAY.    (Dates in 2006 were July 25-30.) 35th tri-annual
Nordlek is a  large Nordic folk dance and spelmansstämma organized every
third year.  Countries rotate hosting responsibilities.  From the past
schedule it looks like Finland might be the next host.  Thousands of dancers
and musicians come to the stämma and meet during an intensive week with a
lot of folk music and folk dance from all of the Nordic countries.  There is
also a Barnlek, plus an Isleik and Hafleik organized by Iceland and the
Faroe Islands. FMI  urban.lind@nordlek.nu or 011-46-707-70-16-01,

******************************************************************

A short note from your host, various and sundry items that may interest you.

I recently spent a week in Iceland seeking traditional folk performers and
dance groups.  My colleague and I met Ingi Johanson from Islandica a band
that performs and records traditional music, Oskar Guðnason, who has a wide
repertoire and has had some songs recorded through studios in Nashville, and
Ingolfur Steinsson, who does records traditional songs and also serves as a
curriculum music consultant for educators in Iceland.

Regarding dancing, we took a free tango lesson (Argentine, not Finnish) on
Wednesday night, a regular event.  This group also meets about three times a
week in the winter and once a week in the summer, with a core of about 60 in
attendance.  When they have a twice yearly tango festival about 400 people
attend.

There is also a Svenska Förening that celebrates Påsk, Valborgs, Midsommar,
etc. and there is a folk dance society.

There are two institutions with buildings that house offices, staff, and
resources that focus on connecting Nordic countries within and outside of
Iceland, the Norraena Felagið and the Nordic Center.   Are readers
interested in getting connected with any of them?  Let me know.

Nordanstigs Spelmanslag, founded 1952, plays music from the northern
part of Hälsingland. This is a very rich region in folk music. We have and
had a lot of good fiddlers; some of them documented the tunes so our archive
files are "Gold mines" for us. This small area, the "commune called
Nordanstig has only 10.000 citizens but we have got six Golden Zorn medals
during the 20th century. That is Swedish (and World) record.       Our
leader, Ol`Torgs Kaisa Abrahamsson received that award 1994.

Today we are about 15 active members, all of us plays violin but some
of us can change to other instruments as harmonica, melodeon, diatonic
accordion, guitar etc. You can listen to examples on
